007: The Black Tie Assignment

For this high-stakes mission, we transformed the Ballroom, Foyer and Riversuite floor of the O2 InterContinental into a world of espionage and elegance. Inspired by the likes of The Man with the Golden Gun, 900 guests stepped into a scene of sleek sophistication – all sharp suits, bold blacks, and Bond-worthy glamour. A repeat client entrusted us to deliver a spy theme without the clichés — just pure class, style, and a dash of 007 cool!

An evening of intrigue and elegance at the 64th Annual Gala MPA Awards, where over 900 guests stepped into a world of Bond-inspired sophistication. Held at the O2 Intercontinental, the event paid tribute to the legendary composer David Arnold, honoured with the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Film & Television Music for his iconic scores, including five James Bond films.

The evening unfolded in true 007 style — a seamless blend of class and thrill. Guests were immersed in a scene reminiscent of Goldfinger, with sleek black décor setting the tone for an unforgettable day. Paloma Faith took to the stage with the Fidelio Orchestra, delivering a powerful performance in tribute to Arnold’s remarkable career. Comedian Tom Allen followed with his signature wit before the day shifted gears into an after-party spectacular — styled head to toe by G&D.

How We Delivered

Following the success of last year’s event, we were thrilled to be invited back by MPA to deliver their annual Christmas celebration once again. With a ‘spy’ theme chosen by the client, we knew from previous experience that it had to be sleek, stylish, and full of Bond-inspired sophistication. The main ballroom embraced luxury and elegance, while the after-party brought a playful twist. Despite working within a tight and challenging budget, we delivered a distinct spy-themed experience that hit the mark.

Spanning three distinct spaces — the drinks reception, main awards ceremony ballroom, and after-party — G&D was tasked with infusing each area with a seamless blend of aristocratic elegance.

G&D Events

We exclusively partnered with our trusted suppliers, with whom we’ve built strong relationships over the years. Despite the tight build schedule, usually with more time, it was all hands on deck to ensure everything was ready in just a few hours. With the added pressure of being so close to the iconic O2 Arena, adhering to strict timelines and security protocols was crucial.

The Ballroom and Foyer were our first priorities, as these were the spaces guests would enter first. In just 3 hours, we dressed 90 tables with stunning black and gold lamps, creating an atmosphere more akin to the elegant settings Bond would attend, rather than a typical Bond theme, to avoid any clichés. The lectern was wrapped in logo print, and a grand red carpet was laid out, all set to welcome the attendees in true style.

With our stage design sent over to the venue’s production team weeks in advance, we arrived to find the stage build already in place. Our focus was on adding the final touches to the foyer, where the welcome drinks were set to begin the daytime event. We brought in iconic props, including a giant Golden Gun and a life-sized Aston Martin, delivering that unmistakable Bond allure. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree with hints of Bond, designed by our long-time florist, added a touch of festive elegance, alongside our signature floral displays flanking the ballroom doors. To guide guests seamlessly, we also created a backlit table plan within the foyer, helping them navigate with ease.

The afterparty location wasn’t in the most obvious spot, so the client wanted us to create something visual to guide guests. And that’s exactly what we did. We wanted to nod to the afterparty theme of ski and snow — because what Bond film doesn’t have an epic snowy ski chase?! To bring this to life, we delivered a striking icy winter installation in the foyer, creating a dramatic archway.

G&D Events

After the three-course meal had been served and the awards presented, it was time to make our way through the icy arch and up the stairs to the pop-up ski resort, just off the Thames in London! As guests entered the space, they were greeted by a dramatic 3D mountain range stage set, with snow underfoot. The room’s awkward pillars were featured in snow, and all around the bar and seating areas, more snow added to the winter wonderland effect.

What was usually a meeting space with pine conference cupboards was transformed into an alpine escape, draped with fairy-lit white fabric. We brought in ski lodge-inspired furniture, complete with lantern lights and cozy fur rugs. For entertainment, we revived the ever-popular karaoke booth and created a snow-heavy photo studio with a ski lift for guests to enjoy endless fun.
