MAD HATTERS IN A HIDDEN GARDEN

A Corporate Summer Garden Party

in Central London

“Curiouser and curiouser!”

A hidden private garden in central London was transformed into an immersive Wonderland-inspired summer party for 250 guests.

When Leo Burnett approached G&D Events to create a themed corporate summer celebration, the brief was far more involved than simply dressing a venue. The vision was to transform one of central London’s hidden private residential gardens into a playful, immersive Mad Hatter’s Tea Party inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Open to the public at lunchtime during the summer months and available for private hire by residents, the garden offered a beautiful backdrop, but it was not a straightforward venue hire. Securing permission to use the space involved a detailed application process, careful operational planning, and close collaboration with the garden committee and their preferred suppliers.

The Brief

The client wanted a summer party that felt imaginative, theatrical and completely different from a traditional corporate event. The space needed to feel transportive from the moment guests arrived, with playful theming, interactive details, live entertainment, and a relaxed garden party atmosphere.

Behind the scenes, the brief was just as much about logistics as it was about design. G&D Events needed to manage the permission process, coordinate approved suppliers, protect the garden environment, and deliver a seamless event within a private residential setting.

A Hidden Space in the Heart of the City

Hosting an event in a private central London garden came with a unique set of considerations. Access, supplier timings, infrastructure, noise, resident requirements, and the condition of the garden all had to be carefully planned.

G&D Events managed the application and approval process on behalf of the client, working closely with the garden team and approved contractors to ensure every detail was agreed well in advance. This meant the client could focus on the experience, while we managed the permissions, planning and practicalities required to make the event possible.

Setting the Scene

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the garden was reimagined as a whimsical Mad Hatter’s Tea Party filled with oversized props, playful styling and unexpected guest moments.

To support the event infrastructure, G&D Events installed a bespoke marquee structure, providing both catering space and shaded areas for guests throughout the garden.

We also coordinated luxury toilet facilities, power distribution, deliveries, contractor schedules, supplier access, and full build and breakdown management. Every operational element was carefully planned to ensure the garden remained protected, the event ran smoothly, and the guest experience felt effortless.

Teacups, Playing Cards & Frozen Margaritas

From the moment guests arrived, the theme was clear. Giant teacups and flamingos created bold visual moments throughout the garden, while oversized playing cards suspended from the trees added to the surreal Wonderland atmosphere.

Food and drinks were served in vintage teacups and saucers, adding another layer of detail to the guest experience. The “Drink Me” test tubes and dressing-up stations encouraged guests to interact with the theme, while live acoustic music and entertainment stalls kept the atmosphere relaxed, playful and full of energy.

Supporting the Event Behind the Scenes

While the finished event felt playful and effortless, the delivery required careful coordination behind the scenes.

G&D Events managed the garden permissions, preferred suppliers, marquee installation, catering infrastructure, luxury loos, contractor schedules and site logistics. This allowed a private residential garden to function as a fully equipped event space, while still respecting the surroundings and maintaining the character of the setting.

The Result

The finished event transformed a peaceful, hidden garden into a memorable corporate summer garden party with a theatrical twist.

For guests, it felt like stepping into a secret Wonderland in the middle of central London. For the client, it delivered the impact of a fully themed event, with the reassurance of polished planning, supplier management, and behind-the-scenes operational control.

The result was an imaginative, immersive, and beautifully delivered summer celebration for 250 guests, balancing creative theming with the practical expertise needed to ensure a complex private garden event ran seamlessly.
